Twitter: 'New Twitter' Goes Live to All

Twitter said Wednesday that the company has now rolled out the so-called "New Twitter" to all of its users.

"As of today, everyone who uses Twitter now has access to the new Twitter," spokeswoman Caroline Penner wrote in a blog post. "Whether you're just signing up today or you've been a user for years, this new experience is finally real for everyone – all 160 million of you – and in six languages to boot."

The redesign of the site was rolled out in mid-September, featuring the ability to view pictures and other multimedia directly in the stream. The redesign also widens the page, adding a right-hand nav space where users can drill down into a given user or topic.

"People are telling us that they love that we've kept the timeline simple while also providing a richer experience through the details pane," Penner wrote.

Twitter executives and co-founders Ev Williams and Biz Stone at a Monday night "fireside chat" in San Francisco that they had been pleasantly surprised. "We are really pleased with the reaction so far," Williams said of the new Twitter design. "Things have worked out surprisingly well."

At the same event, Stone revealed that Twitter Events would be made a priority, now that Stone has stepped down from his role as chief executive officer to focus on product strategy. Twitter Events will provide a event-specific timeline of tweets, possibly eliminating the hashtag in the process.

For those that don't like it, however, those users will be forced to live with it. "You'll be able to switch between both the old and new versions of Twitter for the next few weeks," Penner wrote. "After that, everyone will just use the new version."
